聖地巡礼
Anime and film locations, several of them within a few minutes of this door. One honest caveat first, because it saves disappointment.

Three different things get called “locations”
「聖地」には3種類あります
- Real places drawn as themselves. You can stand exactly where the shot was framed.
- 実在の場所がそのまま描かれたもの。同じ構図で立てます。
- Places used as a model. The name is changed, the layout is adjusted. Recognisable, but not identical.
- モデルになった場所。名前や配置が変えられています。
- Sets. A great deal of “Kyoto” on screen — particularly period drama and anything involving interiors of teahouses — is built at a studio, or somewhere else entirely.
- セット。時代劇やお茶屋の内部などは撮影所のセットであることが多くあります。
Below, we have said which is which.

Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha
いなり、こんこん、恋いろは。
Real place. Set at and around Fushimi Inari, which is drawn closely enough that fans navigate by it. Nine minutes by train from Gion-Shijo, no changes. The shrine is open all night, so an evening visit after the tour groups have gone is entirely possible.
実在。伏見稲荷大社が舞台。京阪で9分、乗換なし。24時間参拝可能です。
Tamako Market
たまこまーけっと
Model. The Usagiyama shopping street is based on Demachi Masugata Shotengai, a genuine covered market north of the centre. It is a working local shopping street rather than a tourist site — which is rather the appeal. Around 20 minutes by train and a short walk.
モデル。うさぎ山商店街のモデルは出町桝形商店街。観光地ではなく生活の商店街です。電車と徒歩で約20分。
Detective Conan
名探偵コナン
Real places. Kyoto recurs across the series and the films. The school-trip arc alone takes in Kiyomizu-dera, Yasaka Koshin-do, Yasaka Shrine, Pontocho, Yogen-in and Sanjusangen-do — all of them reachable from here, most on foot.
実在。紅の修学旅行編には清水寺、八坂庚申堂、八坂神社、先斗町、養源院、三十三間堂が登場します。いずれもこの宿から到達可能です。

The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House
舞妓さんちのまかないさん
Hirokazu Kore-eda's series, available worldwide on Netflix, is set in a maiko lodging house in exactly this kind of neighbourhood — the streets you are staying on.
是枝裕和監督のNetflixシリーズ。舞妓の置屋が舞台で、まさにこの界隈が描かれています。
Note: interiors of okiya and teahouses are private homes and businesses. They are not open, and the ones on screen are largely constructed. What you can do is walk Miyagawa-cho and Hanamikoji in the early morning and see the real streets, quietly, without anyone in them.
注意：置屋やお茶屋の内部は住居・営業施設であり、公開されていません。宮川町と花見小路の街並みを早朝に歩くのが現実的な楽しみ方です。
Period drama, and where it is really made
時代劇はどこで撮られているか
If you have watched a samurai film and wanted to walk down that street — the street is usually at Toei Kyoto Studio Park in Uzumasa, west of the city. It is a working film studio with a permanent Edo-period backlot that visitors can walk through, and shooting sometimes happens while you are there.
時代劇の町並みの多くは、太秦の東映太秦映画村のオープンセットです。実際に撮影が行われている作業中の撮影所で、見学が可能です。
About 40 minutes from here. Worth a half-day if period film is what brought you to Japan — and much more rewarding than hunting for locations that turn out to be sets.

Several of the places on this page are not attractions. Demachi Masugata is where people buy their dinner. The lanes of Miyagawa-cho are where people live and work. Photograph the streets, by all means — but not through anyone's doorway, and not without asking a person first. Getting the shot is not worth being the reason a neighbourhood turns against visitors.
